My contribution at LVL

In this case study, I showcase my journey at LVL Wellbeing, which began in October 2023. I designed three core features - Wellbeing Index, Setting Intention, and Activity History & Leaderboard - that improve employee engagement and retention at work while also helping them focus on their wellbeing journey outside of work. Additionally, I developed these features for the organizational dashboard, providing insights and aggregated data about employees to aid in informed decision-making to help them improve their wellbeing strategy.

Full end-to-end design process

Kicking off a new project, I worked on it from scratch, starting with initial research, wireframing, and aligning with the engineering team. The process included gathering feedback from the product team and stakeholders, iterating designs, and handing off the final product. I repeated this process for each of the three core projects to quickly publish MVPs for users. After accomplishing all the planned features, returning to the first project I designed, the Wellbeing Index, to iterate based on user feedback.

What is the main goal?

Our primary goal is to help employees within organizations lead healthier, happier lives, thereby fostering a healthier work environment. We achieve this by providing on-demand content, programs, and live events through our app to enhance individual wellbeing. Over the past 8 months, we’ve built and launched new core features—Wellbeing Index, Setting Intention, Activity Tracking, Communities Channel, Leaderboard, and Member Dashboard—designed to boost team engagement and support overall wellbeing.

Core Feature 1

Wellbeing Index

The Wellbeing Index is a key feature that enables users to regularly reflect on their wellbeing and monitor progress over time. The key message is that wellness goes beyond mere fitness; it encompasses four pillars of wellbeing—mental, physical, personal growth, and social connection. By assessing themselves across each pillar, users gain valuable insights, bridging the gap between their current state and desired outcomes.

Initial Wellbeing Index is a part of the onboarding and once they are on the app, they are able to do monthly basis to track their monthly wellbeing journey.

By completing their monthly check-in, users receive insights into their current state and desired outcomes, visualized through a ring chart that tracks progress toward their goals. This data allows users to reflect on their wellbeing across the four pillars and identify areas where they’d like to focus more in the coming month.

A few challenges come along with gathering meaningful insights…

We ask users where they currently stand and where they want to be for each of the four wellbeing pillars. The biggest challenge is ensuring this process feels seamless and doesn’t overwhelm users, so it doesn’t feel like they’re filling out a lengthy survey.

How to make it a unique experience?

We integrated interactive elements like an emoji mouth that moves up or down based on slider adjustments and an animation of a pin dropping to represent the user's current state selection.

How to provide valuable insights of Wellbeing Index for organizations?

By offering aggregated data on employees' current states across the four pillars and overall, organizations can develop more effective wellbeing strategies based on these insights. Additionally, by providing benchmarking against the average of other organizations within LVL, companies gain a baseline to measure their current performance and identify areas for improvement.

Core Feature 2

Set Intention

To enhance users' personal journeys towards better wellbeing, we allow them to set clear, focused intentions. We offer customized programs across various wellbeing pillars that users can complete in 7 days. Integration with reminders helps users maintain a steady pace toward their goals.

Surfacing ongoing intention program on the home screen

To not only help users set their intentions but also increase engagement and retention, we prominently display their ongoing intention programs on the home screen. This allows users to easily track their progress, stay motivated to complete their program, and seamlessly set new intentions once they’ve successfully finished.

How to create a seamless experience for setting intentions?

After completing their initial Wellbeing Index, we prompt users to set their intentions based on the areas they want to focus on. By integrating this step immediately after the Wellbeing Index, users can seamlessly reflect on which areas they’d like to improve, making the process intuitive and connected to their current state.

How to provide valuable insights from Intention Programs for organizations?

Key insights for organizations include comparing the popularity of different intention programs and identifying which programs are most frequently selected by employees. Additionally, organizations can gain valuable information about the areas employees are most interested in improving. This data helps organizations understand employee priorities and tailor their wellbeing strategies to address the most relevant needs.

Activity History & Leaderboard

After launching the Activity Tracking feature, which allows users to manually and automatically log their activities from wearable devices, watch on-demand content, and attend live events in our app, we integrated gamification elements to increase team engagement. The Leaderboard promotes motivation by enabling employees to start and maintain their wellbeing journeys.

Where users can find their data, progress, and insights on LVL?

To provide users with a comprehensive view of their holistic wellbeing journey, we have created the "Member Dashboard." This central hub allows users to track their activities, view their position on the leaderboard, and monitor their Wellbeing Index. The dashboard consolidates all personal data and insights, offering a clear and organized space for users to stay engaged with their progress.

Providing the same information but adding more value for organizations

In addition to promoting motivation and engagement through the leaderboard, we provide organizations with valuable insights by tracking the total number of activities logged across the entire organization. This data is broken down by wellbeing pillars, allowing organizations to see which areas are most active. We also integrate benchmarking data, comparing the organization's activity levels with the average of all organizations using our app. This helps organizations understand whether their engagement is high or low compared to others, guiding their wellbeing strategies.

Gamifying the wellbeing journey!

To promote motivation and maximize engagement within an organization, we implemented gamification elements -leaderboard. Based on logged activities, we generate a monthly leaderboard and automatically post updates in the organization’s “#PrioritizeWell” channel within the LVL app. This keeps employees informed of their team’s progress and encourages ongoing participation and engagement.

How to give feedback to users on how their activity not just physical activities…

To give users comprehensive feedback on their activities, we integrate data from both physical activities synced from wearable devices and In-app activities, such as watching meditation content or attending community live events. By breaking down activities by wellbeing pillar, users can easily track and understand their engagement across all aspects of their wellbeing journey.

Reflection

Working with constraints

I faced limitations in the available data visualization libraries, which required frequent collaboration with the engineering team to ensure we could build the necessary features within the given timeline. Additionally, the existing structure introduced complex edge cases, particularly on the dashboard. These challenges taught me how to navigate and resolve edge cases effectively, working closely with the product and engineering teams. To enhance the user experience, we integrated tooltips to guide users.

Working as a team

I recognize that successful projects are a team effort. I consistently share design concepts at early stages with the engineering team to ensure feasibility within the given timeline. I also collaborate closely with PMs and fellow designers, regularly seeking feedback to refine the design process and enhance the user experience. This collaborative approach not only improves the product but also maximizes its impact on the business.
